Why don't bytes go into kilobytes ect. evenly?

16^2 = 256 times 2 = 512 times 2 = 1024 which seems to be the way the memory sticks are sized, i know that middle c on the piano is 256 hz so the next one would be a decade higher on a dB scale of log 20 from memory every 6dB doubles it, and i think this is how the ratio works with your question.
