How painful is bunion surgery?

I am 15 and I have awful bunions on both feet. I have tried other methods to make them less painful but they didn't work. My only option left is surgery. My doctor said it involved putting a plate on my big toe and also breaking it. Will anyone who has had surgery please give me details about pain and recovery of surgery like this? Thanks!
