Is every bit of land in the U.S. 'spoken for'?

I seem to remember that the federal government is the largest landowner in the country. But I am unaware of any homesteading plots available. You can get some pretty good deals on center city foreclosures these days, [houses for less than a thousand dollars] but I doubt that is what you are looking for.
